The OysterFest Seafood Cook Off brings together adventurous chefs and would-be chefs from the West Coast to compete in a Cook Off competition extending over two days. For the last three years the competition has been open to both amateurs and professionals. It is of note that since inception amateurs have won 50 % of the medals and have twice captured the grand prize.
The Event comprises two competitions:
FIRSTLY, applicants can choose to cook one of three Seafood categories: an appetizer, soup (or stew) or a main dish. The dishes are judged on several criteria (including presentation, color, taste, appropriate temperature, and sanitary cooking conditions) by a distinguished panel of judges who are either educators at Culinary Arts Schools or Professional Chefs. All were chosen for their exceptional credentials. The scores of the judges are averaged for each contestant. (Should a contestant be a student of a judge, the score of that judge is not included. Instead, the average of the other judges is used.) At the end of the competition, the scores for each contestant in each category are compared and MEDALS are awarded for the THREE highest scores in each category.
SECONDLY, ALL the scores of ALL THREE categories are considered together and CASH AWARDS and MEDALS (Gold, Silver Bronze) are awarded to the three best entrants. The value of these cash awards is $600, $400 and $300 respectively.
The title of OysterFest Seafood Chef of the year is bestowed upon the GRAND OVERALL WINNER.
